March 16 count shows 1869 unemployed. 1961 district workforce projected at 17050, up slightly from 16800 last year. February 1960 had 1567 unemployed. 538 of February’s unemployed were female. Temporary plant lay-offs and mostly women affected explain the rise. Local office placed 3647 in 1960, about 86 percent of vacancies. remaining jobs were filled or highly skilled. Employment benefits totaled 781,551 in 1960, 75 percent to local residents. 1959 benefits totaled 627,594. Staff expansion planned, including a special services officer and reopening farm placement at Brooks on April 4.

Warren Williamson a 35 year old intermediary described in the ransom note died from a self inflicted shotgun blast in the chest. Authorities traced a ransom demand for 25000 dollars and a letter delivery plan from notes found in the boy's father’s residence and Williamson's car indicating a Tuesday deadline. Williamson was a Belleville resident and church elder.

London(AP) Three men and two women were found guilty of spying for the Soviet Union against the Royal Navy and sentenced to prison terms up to 25 years. Gordon Lonsdale received 25 years.
