Rioting flares in Sharpeville and Langa as police armed with rifles and armored cars fire on crowds protesting pass laws. Death toll climbs in Jo’burg region. hospitals report heavy wounds and casualties.
Prime Minister Diefenbaker said Canada alone must decide on any nuclear test in Alberta oil sands, not the U S AEC. He stressed no test while East West disarmament talks continue, and Canada would control any U S nuclear warheads in its territory.
Ottawa reports the Canadian government will buy four Lockheed C-130B Hercules transports for the Royal Canadian Air Force at an estimated initial cost of 14 million dollars. Negotiations continue and Lockheed may be required to source equipment from Canadian firms worth the same amount.
The Hercules can carry 15 tons for 4 000 miles at 340 mph and land on rough or snowy fields with skis for northern operations. It can fly non stop from Canada to Europe and carry 64 paratroopers or 78 infantrymen. The CL-44 provides five tons up to 2 000 miles at 200 mph. This, with the CL-44, supports potential Canadian UN operations. The Lockheed plane weighs about 65 tons versus 34 tons for the CL-44. The Hercules is the third American aircraft adopted by the RCAF in the past year, alongside the CF-104 and Grumman Albatross.
J. H. Holloway granted a six week adjournment in a zoning appeal hearing on the 0-100 block of Seventh St SE from residential to commercial. The delay was sought by the City of Medicine Hat and Medical Arts Clinic with mixed reactions from appellants and a May 2 date if opposition continues.
A school bus and a freight train collided at a grade crossing near Camden Alabama. Six students were killed and 14 injured, some critically, as the train dragged the bus for about three miles, according to an ambulance driver.
An unmanned B-57 jet crashed into a small house in Denton Maryland killing a woman and her two young grandchildren. Debris shattered windows at a nearby school but blinds protected about a thousand students. The pilot, Captain William Smith, ejected and was injured with fractured legs.
Ireni Rebrin a 33 year old stateless lecturer in scientific Russian at the University of British Columbia has been asked to leave Canada. Her permanent resident application was rejected on grounds she is stateless and an appeal outcome is pending.
In Philadelphia a group of 10 to 15 teenagers attacked 17 year old John Campiglia as he walked home from school. A witness father fired shots in the air and pursued the assailants, grabbing one boy and aiding a second. Campiglia, an honor roll senior at South Philadelphia High School, died after the assault. police questioned 36 youths with no immediate arrests.
