Premier Frank McKenna introduced two resolutions to the New Brunswick legislature proposing enhancements to the Meech Lake accord. He warned NB will not approve the original agreement without broad support and said the companion resolution must gain sufficient backing before effecting changes.
Maurice Gauthier tested positive for lead poisoning after handling lead oxide batteries at Alberta Recoveries and Rentals in Brier Park. His children Maurice 3 Terry 2 and Samantha 1 were hospitalized and treated with calcium EDTA injections as doctors warn of potential learning impacts from lead in body tissues. Provincial officials say department staff visited the plant 16 times last year to advise workers on safety, while the father disputes the adequacy of guidance received.
Don Blenkarn, chair of the Commons finance committee, halted a 31 hour filibuster over the proposed seven percent goods and services tax. Opposition MPs vow an all out drive to block the levy set for January 1, urging Speaker Fraser to rule on the move.
