A 27 year old man, Harvey Francis of the Nakaneet Indian Reserve, was struck by a southbound vehicle while walking on Highway 21 about 500 metres north of Maple Creek Sask at 12 05 a m. Maple Creek RCMP Cpl Norm Thomson reported the fatal collision occurred early this morning.
Statistics Canada survey of 9,000 farmers shows a five percent rise in land left fallow as grain prices slump. Wheat area drops seven percent to 13.1 million hectares with a shift toward barley.
Mayor Ted Grimm says Friday's provincial budget forces a new round of budget talks at City Hall. Increased costs from a five cent gas tax, higher medicare premiums, and rising employee benefits will raise municipal expenses. Council targets an inflationary four to five percent municipal tax rise, with school board requisitions and program cuts affecting overall burden.

Safeway will shut its three Medicine Hat stores this Sunday after defying the city bylaw on Sunday openings.
