New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller said he is not a candidate and will not campaign directly, confirming he will not pursue the presidency.
Police said convict Winston Moseley, already serving life for the Kitty Genovese murder, held a husband and wife captive for over an hour in Buffalo, then fled in their car after the attack. Moseley had escaped from Meyer Memorial Hospital earlier.
Retired Gen. David M. Shoup told Congress that victory in Vietnam would require invading North Vietnam with risks of Soviet China and possible nuclear war. He said the war was not worth even one one-thousandth of the cost to win.
NDP leader Douglas said Prime Minister Pearson is “sort of fizzing out” amid a two ring circus of Parliament and leadership contests. He urged early leadership cleanup and criticized age jibe from Judy La Marsh while proposing a peace plan to end the Vietnam war involving a joint pledge to stop offensive actions and U S withdrawal once negotiations begin.
Ottawa CP Ralph B. Cowan the Liberal rebel will be struck off the list of voting delegates to the Liberal party leadership convention Senator John Nichol said today The case will be dealt with by the convention organizing committee at a meeting Monday April 1 He is in bad favor for voting against an income tax bill and for critical statements about Prime Minister Pearson The convention faces 140 delegates with 14 declared candidates nine major and five unknowns Voting may begin April 6 and run to 8 pm with 50 votes needed to stay on the ballot and the last candidate dropping off automatically
Ottawa Liberal government wins two votes in the Commons on Wednesday but stalls on supplementary estimates. The NDP pushed to fast track a drug price bill before adjournment for the Liberal leadership convention. The government won 164 to 23 with Conservative support and one NDP defector. The motion calls for adjournment until April 23 after completing supplementary estimates and an interim supply bill.
LOS ANGELES AP Cary Grant's fourth wife Dyan Cannon testified she endured yelling fits and beatings and that Grant was a weekly LSD user for ten years. She described a dramatic escape from his dressing room and outlined visits and finances while seeking divorce and custody.
The UNSC was called to convene at noon EST to debate a new outbreak of heavy fighting in the Middle East. Jordanian Ambassador Muhamad H. el-Farra urged urgent council action, accusing Israel of aggression. Weather in Alberta remains sunny and mild with cloudy patches in northern regions and little temperature change ahead.
Alberta PC leader Robert Stanfield called for a House adjournment to allow Liberal leadership candidates to campaign. He faulted Health Minister MacEachen for cuts to treaty Indians and urged cabinet streamlining to improve policy. Stanfield to visit Medicine Hat for noon luncheon and Farmer and Rancher Night. He also commented on fiscal restraint and Cowan's expulsion from the Liberal caucus. Dean Gundlock nominated for the redistributed Lethbridge riding.
London reports the government reduced the bank rate from eight to seven percent as part of the austerity budget. In other dispatches, a Polish avalanche killed at least 19 people, mostly Soviet tourists, in the Sudeten Mountains. East German news agency ADN says Gerhardt Eisler, a former U S exile, has died. In Greece seven men charged over the sinking of the ferry Iraklion, with 241 lives lost, received prison terms from ten months to six years.
