Edmonton reports Premier Greenfield accelerates legislature as session stalls with up to ninety bills introduced. Night sessions begun after announcement that morning sessions would resume. Prolonged delay on liquor act and related measures slows progress, risking quicker prorogation.
Edmonton March 81 Special to The News Hon J E Brownlee attorney general announced no amendments will be made to the public utilities act this session. The gas corporations appeal for franchise rate changes to municipalities will not be considered. The next session will bring amendments and widen commission powers to handle more public questions.
Edmonton March 21 Special to The News Premier Greenfield and the provincial treasurer announced that provincial taxation on trust companies will not be advanced this year. Trust firm reps argued their business is largely on a loan basis and should receive the same treatment as loan companies. East reports say headquarters worried about the contemplated tax rise and protested promptly.
London March 21 Sir Robert Herne chancellor of the exchequer says in the Commons he does not propose to make any conditions to the United States government as to payment of Britain’s due obligations.
The west shows a cloudy regime with moderate temperatures and light snow in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Alberta reports light snow in the north while the south remains comparatively mild today and tomorrow.
Edmonton March 20 A provincial minister announced plans to add about forty miles of railway in the coming construction season. The E D and E C system will extend from Grande Prairie westward fifteen miles to reach Lake Saskatoon, part of a 1 600 000 vote in the year's estimates. A 12 1 4 mile link to the Canada Central line near Peace River Crossing will bring steel to the Waterhole district from Berwyn. An eleven mile extension from Lacombe and North Western will cost 150 000. G W Line improvements on the Great Waterways line totaling 2 098 000 cover reconditioning Lac La Biche to Waterways. No new constructions are planned on that line this year.
