ALBERTA TREASURY BRANCHES SUBSIDY AIDING BANKING EDGE

A study funded by Credit Union Central finds Alberta Treasury Branches receive about 30 million dollars yearly in subsidies from 1981 to 1995. The work by Glen Mumey and Randy Otto says the subsidy gives a competitive advantage over chartered banks and credit unions. They note 0.34 percent higher returns for banks and 20 million in offsetting government subsidies plus 10 million in deposit guarantees.
