Edmonton report notes CL Milnes of Claresholm attacked the government for failing to economize. It cites a rise in ordinary expenditure from 8.5 million in 1920 to 11.5 million in 1925 and that highways consumed 23 percent of 1923 appropriations.
London March 20 Death today claimed Marquis Carzon of Keilestone Lord President of the Fifty Connell and former Foreign Secretary. He died at 6 35 am after a pneumonia illness following an operation two weeks earlier. The Marquis was 66. He first showed illness March 6 collapsing while dressing for a public dinner at Cambridge where he would have spoken. An operation followed in London four days later. The medical bulletins avoided naming the malady though bladder trouble was cited as the cause. Prices at the market today include reef seven cents per pound and up veal nine cents per pound and up pork thirteen cents per pound and up mutton sixteen and nine tenths cents per pound bitter six cents per pound eggs extras forty cents firsts thirty five cents a dozen. Toronto board of education will not employ any more married women teachers.
Edmonton March 20 Medicine Hat's charter amendments passed the municipal law committee. A two year mayor term was supported while a clause allowing a non listed voter to pay 5 for inclusion drew strong criticism. Proportional representation was discussed but not decided. The bill was carried 1 1/2 to 3 and will be reported to the House.
Ottawa reports Arthur Meighen, opposition leader, attacking the Petersen contract in the house. He argues effective ocean rate control requires a representative imperial body and questions why Canada would pay 18 million or 13 million to Sir William Petersen instead of using the government merchant marine ships already under a government board. He urges immediate government control of its ships to cut rates without subsidies.
