Timeline of Alberta health regionalization reforms
The Rainbow Report of 1989-90 proposed nine regional health authorities to replace hundreds of boards amid revenue gaps. By 1994-95 seventeen regional authorities and cancer and mental health boards aimed to cut costs while improving care, with elect ed boards later ending in 2001. In 2004 nine regional boards remained, then in 2008-09 Alberta Health Services centralized oversight under a CEO and board. In 2009-10 twelve health advisory councils formed for regional input. In 2013 the AHS board was fired over pay at risk bonuses. A 2014 rural health care review was announced.
