In Ottawa Friday the opposition forced a recorded Commons vote to disapprove a government bill raising salaries for grain board members and altering the Canada Grain Act. The motion to send the bill to the agriculture committee failed 95 to 55, with the CCF, Conservative and Social Credit opposing the Liberals and independent Fernand Girard voting with the opposition. The bill then moved to second reading on division. A later committee move to appoint future assistant grain commissioners via western pools and the Farm Union Council failed 70 to 9. Opposition mainly centered on the appointment of Stanley Loptson to the board, which they called political. Howe defended the appointment.
