The Reform party lost a bid to allow MPs to display a small flag on desks as MPs voted 194 to 51 against the motion. Ontario Liberal Bryan Wilfert and Ivan Grose, New Brunswick Tory Greg Thompson, and Independent John Nunziata sided with Reform.
Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Stifora says El Nino did not cause the Medicine Hat snowstorm that shattered March records. A powerful low pressure system over B C and a slow moving moisture laden front dumped 28 cm by 5 p m, threatening the 33.8 cm March daily record set in 1954 as temperatures climb later in the week.
Across the city 28 centimetres of heavy wet snow blanketed streets on St Patrick’s Day. Motorists became stranded, then neighbours like Randy Cote and cousins Sheldon Andreas and Aaron Kilthau aided trapped drivers with shovels and 4x4s. A school bus was stuck on Fifth Avenue S.E as police closed roads and Haliburton Energy Services donated a winch truck to assist.
Const. Mark Morin said a bus skidded out of control and struck a lamppost, knocking it over and causing a gas leak. Dean Reid and Jeff McArthur freed the bus after several tries, with other city workers fixing the leak. Maurice Marchand noted the truck hauls sand bins and supplies around.
A Toronto dispute centers on how long former hockey czar Alan Eagleson must serve under an international plea deal. He received an 18 month Canadian prison sentence plus US probation, with parole not until after six months unless a conditional home release is approved. US prosecutors say the agreement implied no full early release before July.
RCMP confirm collision with power lines near Echo Dale Regional Park after a powered parachute crashed Saturday, killing David Steele and his daughter Leia. Eyewitness Frank Millington described the craft approaching from the west before a sharp descent, while Sgt. Errol Cruickshank noted a chute fragment remaining on the line and the warning balls on the cables. The investigation continues.
