Harold Roopchand was misled by a scammer posing as a police officer who seized $130,000 in jewelry and $6,000 in cash from his jewelry store. Roopchand assisted the impostor in loading valuables and removing security tapes before the theft.
Dan Sims a 19 year old fugitive neo Nazi skinhead says he will return to Edmonton to serve a one year sentence for beating Keith Rutherford a Sherwood Park broadcaster which left him blind in one eye. He spoke from Tennessee and plans to fly to Edmonton in the second week of April to surrender at the international airport.
Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton dominates Illinois and Michigan primaries, capturing about 51 percent of votes. Tsongas 22 percent and Brown 19 percent trails. Bush defeats Buchanan as nomination nears.
In a whites-only vote 68.7 per cent backed F W de Klerk to end apartheid and share power with blacks. Mandela hailed the result while Treurnicht warned of continued struggle as violence rose in black townships. Mulroney urged negotiations and pledged aid to democracy efforts in South Africa.
Alberta Treasurer Dick Johnston signs an agreement with 125000 city and provincial employees to fix the two largest pension plans. The deal reduces an estimated 6.6 billion unfunded liability by 22 billion and costs taxpayers about 1 billion over 40 years. Employees incur small rate increases while the province keeps plan governance but can transfer control if needed.
A federal review panel urged tighter prison controls for early release and passes based on risk. It called for broader background checks including juvenile records and police files. Legere and Gingras escaped on passes and committed additional murders, prompting the push for reforms.
Antigonish Nova Scotia mayor Colin Chisholm proposes waiving residential property taxes for the 1992 83 year to save homeowners about 1 million and reduce grants in lieu for St Francis Xavier University and St Martha’s Hospital. Council vote set for April 20. Some residents back the plan while a former councillor calls it insane.
The Argentine government raised the death toll to 11 after the bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires. Police said more than 200 injured, including three Israelis and an Argentine priest. Islamic Jihad in Lebanon claimed responsibility, calling the attack part of a broader campaign to “wipe out” Israel.
