United States proposes UN force for southern Lebanon crisis

The United States formally urged the United Nations Security Council to call for Israeli troop withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the deployment of a UN peacekeeping force to restore peace and Lebanese government authority. Beirut reports say talks were under way with Lebanon, Israel, and Syria on a temporary UN force to be replaced after three months by Lebanese army units. Israeli raids continued north of the Litani as the conflict escalated with hundreds of casualties reported among Lebanese, Palestinians, and Israelis.

Six remain captive in Quebec prison hostage crisis
