The Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats pressed Prime Minister Trudeau over alleged ministerial meddling in Quebec courts. An adjournment motion for a public inquiry failed 127 to 92 as Liberals and most Social Credit backed the government.
The Canadian Press report notes Prime Minister Trudeau is accused of attempting a cover up regarding ministers allegedly interfering with Quebec courts. It also cites Conservative Leader Joe Clark on public reaction and other political moves ahead of parliamentary sessions.
Alain Goulet, 49, of Calgary, died in St. Michael's Hospital after receiving a heart from a teenage girl donor. The hospital cited infection and rejection as the cause. The operation, led by Dr. James Yao and Dr. Clare Baker, was Toronto's first heart transplant in five years.
The 31st British Columbia legislature opened with protests inside the chamber as Ed Smith was elected Speaker 35 to 19 amid opposition objections over staff cuts. Outside, about 200 BC Students Federation members protested education cuts during Lt Governor Walter Owen's arrival.
A severe storm blasted Newfoundland and the four Maritime provinces with gales and heavy snow. Transportation shut downs spread from air and sea to rail, causing delays and road closures. No deaths, but debris injuries and power outages disrupted St John’s and Moncton.
Medicine Hat-Redcliff Tories heard a detailed defense of Alberta policies. Jim Horsman outlined fiscal restraint, saving via the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, and the plan to diversify income sources. He warned the resource boom will fade in 10 to 15 years.
Gulf Oil Corp. denied reports that Angola has nationalized its holdings. Spokesman Bryan Raggett said Gulf had been in contact with the MPLA and expects talks to begin. Gulf held 120 wells in the Cabinda Enclave, producing about 150,000 barrels daily at peak, and shut the plant in December amid civil strife. The company had placed 102 million dollars in a special trust for taxes and royalties, later turned over to the MPLA. Negotiations with the new government were to begin.
