Ottawa reports a four month compulsory training plan extending to married men and widowers 21 to 45 with first class reporting March 20 at selected camps. About 72 000 men expected to train over twelve months under the revised regulations.
City council met in light session approving a 4 percent business tax based on 1940 assessments. Offers on city property were accepted and the police committee was authorized to discuss licenses and early closing with the Chamber of Commerce. The finance committee kept salvage rights on rails for CPR Ajax Spur work. Dr. Gershaw urged Wartime Housing Scheme loans and noted the 10 year census should continue for economic comparison.
At a 4 joint meeting in City Council chambers the retail section of the Chamber of Commerce and a merchants committee agreed to back amendments on organizing retail merchants and urged local traders to sign the questionnaire from the Retail Merchants Association of Alberta as vital to their business.
British and allied merchant shipping losses for the week ending March 9 totalled 25 ships aggregating 98,932 tons, the Admiralty announced today. The weekly losses report ed during February averaged 75,000 tons and during January, 53,3000 tons.
Edmonton march 18 Canadian press. Andrew Davison Calgary urged in the Alberta legislature a full investigation into a $150 000 000 debt refunding contract dating 1938 to 1939. He accused two civil servants Dr W W Wright and Dr C T Galbraith of Calgary of being part of a syndicate to gain large profits and called for inquiry into Sousa of Los Angeles and Calgary and the dismissal of Wallace and Spargo. The session focused on the budget with adjournment to resume at 3 p m today.
Arrival of Officer Commanding No. 34 S.F.T.S. Group Captain A ap Ellis was delayed by serious illness while en route to the city. He developed peritonitis in Regina and was hospitalized. Wing Commander D A Gibson will lead the S F T S for six weeks amid the recovery. A Farmers Agricultural Short course is being organized with Robert Putnam signing official notices.
Eleven Greek soldiers returning from a prisoner exchange said Valona in Albania lay in ruins after recent British air attacks. They described a port in shambles as they traveled through Belgrade in an Italian Red Cross train of 18 cars, many of them severely injured.
Windham Ohio March 18 A railroad official said 40 workers were seriously injured and several may have been killed when an Erie Railroad car train collided broadside with a motor train carrying 600 construction workers en route to the Ravena shell loading plant within a large government reservation. Five coaches derailed and a freight locomotive tipped onto its side with ten freight cars off the rails.
H P Miller is named YMCA director for No 34 SFTS and assumes duties at the school. He directs recreational activities and assists with the sports program after serving as program and sports director at Red Deer camp. Miller spent 11 years with the Winnipeg YMCA in a volunteer role and remains on its board.
General meeting of the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce will be held in the Assiniboia hotel Thursday at 12 15 to coincide with the Agricultural Short course. Speaker will be O S Longman Field Crops Commissioner Department of Agriculture Reservations may be made at the Chamber of Commerce office.
RAF bombers sank a large enemy supply ship off the Frisian islands and attacked Wilhelmshaven Bremen Rotterdam Oldenburg Emden and Oldenburg ports. Explosions and fires were reported in dock and industrial areas as the coastal command torpedoed a large supply vessel.
Former Associated Press dispatch notes Germany delays in Greece, suggesting Hitler fears a two front war. The piece estimates 100 000 British troops could land in Greece undetected, aided by Bulgarian Nazi air power, and that Belgrade first reported the British advance. It argues German restraint to protect Western front while facing potential Greek British resistance.
The analysis argues Germany cannot win by crushing British-Greek forces in the Balkans. Rugged terrain prevents blitzkrieg use, and any victory there offers limited gains. It suggests Hitler seeks a Western strike on the United Kingdom for 1941, not a Greece-focused campaign.

He returns to Ottawa to resume duties as executive assistant to Hon C D Howe. He defended the Anson program against criticisms noting the department’s businesslike administration and excellent progress.
German liner Bremen suffered heavy damage from a fire that was extinguished after the incident. Sources say fire caused substantial harm to the 51,731 ton vessel. British authorities question whether the blaze was a bait to draw RAF bombers into a trap. The Air Ministry has not confirmed RAF involvement in last week’s raids.
Ottawa report states Alberta must provide a close estimate of its end of year financial position to renew 1 946 000 in treasury bills due April 15 1941. Correspondence shows surplus disposition to be stated and further final figures required for the June 1 2 448 000 maturity unless substantial repayments occur.
London reports from the Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security state about 1000 people were killed in Nazi raids on Merseyside March 12 13 and Clyde area March 13 14. An additional 1300 were listed as injured in the raids.
Belgrade dispatch says Britain is continuing to unload anti aircraft guns searchlights and sound detectors at several Greek ports for an army of about 300000 men. The message notes focus on defending Greek mainland ports and securing lines and air fields against Nazi air attacks. The Mediterranean fleet is escorting large convoys from central and eastern ports to Greece with strong allied escort.
W Averill Harriman Roosevelt aid envoy to Britain says he has given special attention to shipping and food. He arrived after meeting Premier Churchill and government leaders and will report to Washington on the priority of Britain's needs relative to US defence plans.
