Premier Peter Lougheed warns of a delicate and difficult phase in pending oil pricing talks with the new federal Liberal government. He states Alberta could withhold approval of two multi billion dollar oil sands projects for over a year to secure an acceptable pricing agreement.
Premier Lougheed says Alberta will not accept an energy pact offering fewer benefits than a near completion Clark era proposal. Negotiations will involve Lalonde and Leitch, with Trudeau facing provincial resistance over Ottawa's control of royalties and resources.
Tehran reports show Islamic Republican party winning 29 of 54 seats with independents and other groups taking most of the rest. Beheshti signals Majlis will decide fate of hostages, while the ailing shah undergoes spleen surgery postponed due to strength issues and a mild pneumonia.
Uruguayan ambassador Fernando Gomez, held for nearly three weeks by guerrillas in the Dominican Republic embassy, jumped from a second story and was rescued. He sustained a broken collar bone and was taken to a military hospital. The embassy siege has freed 24 captives. negotiations remain stalled.

A Dimanche Matin poll conducted March 7 11 with 783 responses indicates 47.4 percent would vote yes to the Parti Quebecois proposal 43.6 percent no and 9 percent undecided if the referendum were held last week. Francophones favor yes 55.4 percent while non francophones mostly back no 76.8 percent. Premier Levesque calls the findings comforting and says they reflect growing Quebec solidarity.
The Alberta cabinet has ordered a complete review of child care operations. A three member panel led by Mr Justice J C Cavanagh will examine the Child Welfare Act and the Social Care Facilities Licensing Act following reports on Northern Regional Treatment Residence and Westfield Centre. The panel also includes Dr Lloyd Grisdale and Flora Allison. The review focuses on a broad range of child care issues and omits direct references to Westfield or Peace River actions.
Energy Minister Marc Lalonde says he will walk the extra mile to reach a new oil pricing agreement with Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed. He plans talks with Saskatchewan and British Columbia ministers this week as Ottawa seeks lower prices than the prior PC plan.

Afghan National Liberation Front says government troops and Soviet forces suffered 50 dead and many wounded in an assault on a Barri base in Paktia. Rebels report further clashes at Kufry and Shoonkrai in Kunar with several government losses and 75 soldiers surrendering at Kufry.
People magazine polls indicate Edward Kennedy is named the least trustworthy politician by twice as many readers as Richard Nixon. The survey notes Nixon topped the list in the previous year, while Kennedy holds the dubious title in the current poll.
