Cash and Carry break in reported at Dunmore Road store

Medicine Hat Police say between March 14 and 15 a break in occurred at the Cash and Carry on 3341 Dunmore Road East. Three credit cards and two laptop computers were stolen, with total losses estimated at about 1250 dollars. Police urge tips to Medicine Hat Police Service or CrimeStoppers.

City energy panel backs $1.5 million budget amendment

The energy committee approved a plan to the city council to add 1.5 million to the 2005 capital budget for gas and oil facilities funded from the gas depletion reserve. The change also raises 2006 to 2008 depletion expenses by 250 thousand annually to cover two new salt water disposal facilities in Fox Valley and Blindless, expected to save about 55 thousand per month in handling costs once active.

Saskatchewan to launch online Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan

The Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan will move online at E-Sask.ca after a $271,619 grant from Western Economic Diversification and the provincial centennial office. The 1,072 page reference book from Canadian Plains Research Centre will accompany entries with photos and multimedia. The launch target date was not specified.

Alberta marks 100 years of legislature in Edmonton gala

The Alberta assembly celebrates its centennial with former and current elected members gathered to honor the legislative building opened in 1905. Premier Ralph Klein and former premier Peter Lougheed planned to attend an evening gala as Speaker Ken Kowalski led tributes to the institution and its builders. Hundreds attended the tribute to the legislature overlooking the North Saskatchewan River.

Brooks horse euthanized after highway collision west of Patricia

A horse was euthanized Tuesday morning after a collision on Highway 544 west of Patricia involving a tractor trailer and a pickup with livestock trailer. Both westbound vehicles left the road into a ditch. no injuries were reported. The tractor trailer driver, a 29-year-old Brooks man, faces a charge of improperly crossing a solid line under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act.

Thatcher seeks 72 hour parole passes from prison

Winnipeg CP reports Colin Thatcher, the former Saskatchewan politician serving a life sentence for murdering his ex wife, seeks unescorted 72 hour passes. A three member National Parole Board panel will hear his bid at Rockwood Institution near Winnipeg. Thatcher, 67, has been in custody for over 21 years and previously denied temporary absences in 2004 and full parole nine months earlier due to ongoing safety concerns.

Canada approves 44 percent duties on US corn

Ottawa says U S corn is subsidized and sold below cost prompting combined duties of 44 percent. Canada Border Services Agency formalized preliminary duties first imposed last December on unprocessed grain corn after Washington voiced complaints that the duties of 1.65 dollars per bushel are unfair.
