Simonne Flynn of Alberta remains undefeated at the Canadian senior ladies curling championship in Prince George B C with a 9 to 5 victory over Peggy Bentley of Yellowknife N W T. Flynn teams with Doreen Desharnais Fern Muirhead and Kay Pahl to lead tied with Manitoba at 3 0 after scoring four in the seventh end and holding on after Bentley’s late reply. In other action Mabel Mitchell beat Dorothy Sukuyama 10 1 as Mitchell’s Manitoba foursome joins Flynn atop the standings. Separately in Toronto the Canadian dollar rose above 76 cents US briefly before retreating to 76 01.
Police investigated Canada Safeway three stores opening on Sunday under the city bylaw banning large retailers. Inspectors said as many as 20 charges could be laid, with hearings set for March 26. Safeway disputes the outcome and continues Sunday openings.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney urged rapid freer trade with the United States in a Commons speech, arguing the plan will lift Newfoundlanders, British Columbians and Albertans.
