BATUS retools for drones and high tech tests at Suffield
BATUS commander Lt Col Paul Eaton says warfare has evolved and the Canadian Forces alliance will steer future testing at CFB Suffield north of Medicine Hat. The base, once a hub for large scale tank exercises with 5,000 to 10,000 troops, now focuses on drones, counter drones, drone swarming, autonomous vehicles, and related evaluation. British personnel at Suffield number about 70, far fewer than pre-2020 levels, with armour training shifted to Germany and Latvia. Eastern Europe remains the point of need amid NATO strength and Russia’s war.
