Helley in court for Redcliff Food Fair robbery

Medicine Hat man Mark Bradley Helley 40 and Shelley Lynn Beierbach 38, both from Medicine Hat, appeared briefly in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Tuesday facing counts of robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon and uttering threats for the Redcliff Food Fair Convenience store robbery on Feb 26. Bail hearings were set with Helley moved to March 21 and Beierbach’s for March 2 at 9:30 a.m. in provincial court. The pair are also charged in separate robberies on Feb 27 at Tim Hortons and a 7-11 on Carry Drive.

March 14 marks the 90th anniversary of women in Saskatchewan gaining the right to vote in provincial elections in 1916 under the Dominion Elections Act 1900. The act barred women and other groups from voting, restricting suffrage to a narrow citizen base.

Jail term for RCMP tank fire in Alberta

Alberta man Alex Contois, 22, set a fire in the gas tank of an RCMP cruiser after tearing off his underwear and lighting it. The April 25 2004 incident in Janvier destroyed one police vehicle and damaged another. He pleaded to mischief, receiving five months in jail and a $10,000 fine from Justice Jack Watson.

New seal hunt limits to be set in April

Ottawa federal fisheries minister will announce fresh catch limits for this spring seal hunt. Loyola Heath issued a news release saying a brief statement will outline the management plan for April. Last year ended a three year plan that allowed 975000 seals mainly pups. The 2005 season limit was just under 320000.

Bernardo claims 17 more assaults from jail

Police say Paul Bernardo alleges about 17 undisclosed sexual assaults between 1986 and 1991. Detectives describe the list as vague and statement like and plan to meet Bernardo's lawyer to clarify details. Earlier reports cited at least 10 incidents. Peel region police confirm about 17 alleged assaults were provided last month.
