Suffield may turn to a dust bowl under military use

A report for the Alberta government warns continued British Army training at Suffield could devastate the terrain. Commissioned by Premier Peter Lougheed and led by J. K. Gray, the study says ongoing maneuvers threaten land, gas infrastructure, and wildlife, with up to 300 square miles at risk and decades for revegetation.

Suffield drilling plan could tap Alberta gas riches

Alberta government to spend 2.5 million drilling for natural gas in the Suffield British Block 30 miles north of Medicine Hat. Premier Lougheed says reserves could exceed four trillion cubic feet and fuel Edmonton or Calgary for 200 years. 77 wells planned with a decision by 1975 on production and a possible Crown corporation, joint venture, or private mining path.

Strike talks break off in southern Alberta teachers' dispute

In Lethbridge after eight hours of talks between teachers and trustees the mediation attempt failed. Negotiators claimed the trustees ended negotiations citing unreasonable demands while teachers accused trustees of arrogance. Over 1,300 teachers walked out affecting about 30,000 students across 18 rural districts.

Remanded hearing for manslaughter defendant Rowe

A hearing on a manslaughter charge against Robert Rowe 44 of no fixed address was remanded until Monday March 19 in Magistrates Court. Crown prosecutor Murray Shivon said a preliminary hearing date would be set then and defence solicitor Roy Wiedemann would seek bail. Rowe has chosen trial by judge and jury.

The AMA reported at 8 a.m. that highways in the Medicine Hat area were in good driving condition. Some snow and icy sections were present on Highway 1 near the Swift Current area.

Edmonton Mines and Minerals Minister Bill Dickie says Suffield natural gas could spark a large scale petrochemical industry in Medicine Hat.
