Argentinian cardinal Bergoglio chosen pope Francis
The Catholic Church selected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires as pope, the first from the Americas and first Jesuit named Francis. At 76 he was elected on the fifth ballot to succeed Benedict XVI, in a historic papal transition. The new pope spoke of serving from the end of the earth and greeted faithful in St. Peter's Square.
