Newhall Calif March 14 rescue workers count 28 bodies in improvised morgues and search miles of mud for 300 to 600 residents believed dead. Mud stretched 65 miles through valley floors hindering exact toll as missing figures remain uncertain on the second day of efforts.
A man named Metro shot his wife and then killed himself after confronting her on the street in Edmonton. The woman Mrs Glenfulk had sought police protection over threats, and the tragedy occurred within a minute as bystanders restrained the killer.
A fire on a deluxe Cairo Luxor bound train early today destroyed Eastman Kodak hunting films. George Eastman of Rochester and his party were aboard the first class coach and adjoining sleeping car, with nude animal life reels among those lost.
Mrs A H Pearson of Bow Slope becomes a widow ten days after her marriage when A H Pearson and friend Amand were in an accident sixteen miles south of Brooks. Their car overturned on ice. Amand walked hours for help, Pearson died from a fractured skull. Coroner in Brooks ruled no inquest. Body shipped to New York for burial. brother to arrive from a former place for services.
British officers died in a midair collision when their aircraft crashed after colliding with another plane. The other plane landed safely.
Edmonton March 14 The Legislature approved 4 974 200 for public works with 1 598 037 from income and 3 376 268 from capital accounts. Debates centered on jail staffing and uniforms, and calls to finish the Edmonton to Jasper highway to boost tourism and connect the province.
Three people died and a fourth person was seriously injured when the Santa Fe passenger train nicknamed She Cont derailed near Yampal Abs in California. Fireman Tom Cole and clerk Bul Joy of Needles were among the injured. a shop clerk Daugherty was killed. Authorities believe a broken rail caused the incident.
Winnipeg reports a firm market tone with little grain interest. Prices closed mostly unchanged to 18 cents lower, cash wheat trading dull as shippers pursued lower grades and trimmed bids 1 to 4 cents, while holders stayed firm on value.

Dr W B McKinnon says he rested well overnight and is resting comfortably this afternoon, with optimism for a rapid recovery.
