Fifty eight writers completed the 24 hour race at the Groucho Club in London. The winner receives about 1100 Canadian dollars, a hardcover publication and shelf space in London bookshops.
Barings trader Nick Leeson refused voluntary extradition at a Hesse state court. Prosecutor Hans-Hermann Eckert said the decision starts a three to five month legal process. Leeson is in a Frankfurt jail after arrival from Asia with his wife.
In University Community Hospital Florida a 77 year old man Lee Alfonso died after a respirator was removed by a staff member who failed to identify him. The hospital said the worker did not check the patient chart or identify bracelet before the order. The employee was suspended pending investigation. Earlier a surgeon amputated Willie King’s left leg though the right leg was to be removed and he was moved to Tampa General Hospital.
Canadian Forces Base Suffield will phase out 200 military positions by 1997 under Defence 2000. Thirty personnel leave this summer with civilians filling most roles. 320 civilians remain and 10 to 15 civilian jobs may go between 1996 and 1998.
The EU halted high level meetings with Canada after Canada seized the Spanish trawler Estai. EU ambassadors met to decide retaliatory measures and possible boycott of the Halifax G7 summit while Madrid weighs moves on free movement. Captain Enrique Davila Gonzalez was released on bail.
A defense witness is set to challenge Detective Mark Fuhrman’s denial of meeting Kathleen Bell who says he slurred blacks and interracial couples. Bell described comments at a 1980s Marine recruiting center and at a restaurant meeting in 1986.
Neighbors describe 53 year old Euxens Bauer as a popular local businessman shot dead after a police chase following a suspected impaired driving stop near Valleyview. Bauer had recently moved to a ramshackle farm southeast of the town after selling his store. His second wife had relocated to British Columbia and his two grown children no longer lived at home.
