End of Laos operation eyed by South Vietnamese officers

South Vietnamese field officers at a border command post predicted the major Laos operation would end in about two weeks with some troops remaining at border posts. Brigadier General Pham Van Phu said Ho Chi Minh trail forces were decimated in southern Laos and the 1st Infantry Division moved toward the frontier as U.S. air support wanes with coming rains.

Alberta Housing extends mortgage service program

Alberta Housing Corp. will provide mortgage money to families earning as little as $4,000 a year. The loans target households not served by Central Mortgage and Housing Corp. The announcement came in the provincial legislature on Friday.

Pork producers seek exemption from national farm groups plan

Rose given life for non capital murder of Laporte

Paul Rose, 27, found guilty by a Montreal Court of Queen's Bench jury of non capital murder in the killing of Quebec labor minister Pierre Laporte during the October kidnapping. The jury, after seven weeks of trial, delivered verdicts in the case and Rose received life imprisonment plus one month for contempt of court. Three co-defendants Jacques Rose, Francis Simard, and Bernard Lortie face separate trials on similar charges later.

Govt denies plan in Home Oil deal

Lethbridge Arena Destroyed by Fire

A fire of undetermined origin gutted the Lethbridge arena injuring 1,500 hockey fans who escaped unharmed. The Edmonton Maple Leafs led the Lethbridge Sugar Kings 2-1 in the Alberta Junior Hockey League semi final when flames broke out early in the third period. An emergency meeting will decide if play resumes or a new game is scheduled. The blaze threatened the boiler room and caused the arena roof to collapse while an adjacent service club was evacuated. The city-owned venue, built in the 1930s and recently renovated, stands on a block near the business district.

50-50 Lougheed wants new tax deal
