Education health and social security programs will benefit from a projected 28 million dollar provincial sales tax revenue in 1954 55 across five provinces. British Columbia expects about 60 million, Quebec 41.6 million, with New Brunswick seeing a decline due to a tax cut, while Saskatchewan Newfoundland and others anticipate modest increases.
Edmonton. Elmer Roper, Alberta CCF leader, opposes the Social Credit plan to raise sessional indemnity for members of the Alberta legislature by $600 to 3200. He argues the increase is unnecessary and could turn lawmakers into professional politicians. He calls the move a bad principle.
Health Minister Dr W W Cross told the Alberta legislature budget debate that researchers believe they have found the source of pollution in the North Saskatchewan river. He warned that if tainted water continues further steps will be taken as the pollution affects centers downstream from Edmonton, notably Prince Albert, for weeks.
The Medicine Hat United Nations Group schedules a special meeting on March 18 in the public library auditorium at 8 p.m. Dr James McArthur, attached to the Dominion government agricultural department and former U.N. adviser in the Middle East, will speak on Middle East topics and Near East development. Admission is 25 cents, proceeds fund student attendance at a U.N. seminar in Banff in August.
Halifax CP states State Secretary Pickersgill attended the Maritime university students Parliament as Liberal prime minister designate but became Opposition leader. The opening vote tally showed 20 Progressive Conservatives and 17 Liberals with others. Pickersgill declined to form a government and criticized the PC government of E D Fulton.
A snow storm moved northeast from Colorado and Kansas, reducing visibility to zero in portions of five states. It dumped up to 10 inches of snow, with winds up to 100 mph diminishing by morning. Hail and lightning reached as far as Grand Rapids Michigan.
The 1953 Medicine Hat School District No. 76 annual report shows total revenue of 486,342.72, up 12.5 percent from 1952, with expenditures at 481,847.49 and a 4,485.23 surplus. Teacher salaries rose about 27,000 and operating costs 12,000, while current revenue was used to cover prior capital-cost deficits. The report notes higher provincial grants and slightly lower local tax support. In a separate note, London police detain a man in a kidnapping case involving a child.
The Medicine Hat School Board reports debt charges will dominate costs over the next five years as capital expansion drives education requisitions higher. 1954 debt reached 27 000 for Riverside and Connaught additions with the high school workshop. Projections show charges surpassing 50 000 in 1954 and rising toward 125 000 in five years, potentially lifting the mill rate by about five mills.
Cortisone is used in many trials at Medicine Hat General Hospital for a wide range of ailments. Five year old Dale Porter receives experimental cortisone for leukemia while a young patient recovers from kidney swelling caused by water retention. The leukemia patient shows improved appetite and weight.
Grant MacEwan told Medicine Hat Canadian Club that widespread misconceptions about Canada's north persist because few Canadians have visited or studied it. He cited past western misbeliefs about habitation and crops, noting no northern line limits settlement and northern climates can be managed with proper gear. He discussed the north’s history, continental defense, and economic role.
About 1,200 churchgoers across three London churches prayed through the night for Billy Graham's crusade. At St Pauls Portman Square 600 attended, 300 joined a tabernacle in Elephant and Castle, and 300 at St Mary Magdalene in Holborn. A tea break came at 2 a.m. Graham plans three revival meetings at Harringay Arena with about 2,500 admitted after 12,000 were let in.
A 1953 report shows high school product cost at 238.22 and per pupil schooling at 156.28. Enrollment figures span 2,447 in 1930 to 2,864 last year, with projections to 3,800 by 1959. Distribution across schools listed along with staff totals and salaries.
In February 1954 new construction contracts hit a record for the month, boosting the year to date total 13 percent above the prior year. February car sales rose 13 percent from January to 401,500, while steel output lagged and freight carloadings fell. Unemployment rose by 500,000 for the month to about 3.5 million as department store sales declined.
