Prime Minister Trudeau drew a warm welcome from Alberta Liberals in Lethbridge after about 200 demonstrators gathered outside the hotel. He attended the opening reception before heading to Lake Louise for the World Cup Downhill, with a two hour stay marked by a protest over cruise missile testing in northern Alberta and unemployment.

Documents show Mackasey on Hall’s board in late November 1981 before he says he sought cabinet help. He says he declined board offers after legal advice. Claude Bruneau former Power Corp executive also lists on Hall’s board in bankruptcy papers but denies committing.
Alberta NDP Leader Grant Notley becomes official Opposition leader in the 79 member legislature after 13 years of struggle. He seeks an emergency debate on the economy amid 136 000 unemployed, while Premier Lougheed questions Notley’s economic credibility and favors private industry over spending. Notley’s elevation marks a milestone for the party and follows Martin’s win last November.
In London OPEC ministers seek quotas as Ahmed Zaki Yamani voices optimism for a quick agreement. Sources cite Saudi Iran tensions as the main hurdle while Humberto Calderon Berti warns a price war could push base prices from 34 to 20 dollars a barrel harming exporters including Mexico and Britain.
Gallup figures after Joe Clark's Winnipeg defeat reveal Conservatives drop from 49 to 45 percent while Liberals rise to 34 and NDP to 19. Undecided voters jump to 31 percent as Liberal gains widen nationally though Quebec still leads Liberal support.
Petro-Canada announced it will own 80 percent of BP Refining and Marketing Canada Ltd, acquiring 51.7 million Class A and 1.15 million Class B shares for 350 million dollars. The deal, plus 230 million for inventories and debt, places Petro-Canada among the nation’s top five gasoline retailers with about 15 percent of the market and nearly 3,000 stations nationwide.
