The plan, modeled after Montana Oregon and parts of British Columbia Saskatchewan, targets speeders and drunk drivers and may be announced during the budget debate by Attorney General Lucien Maynard.
In Ottawa the Justice Minister proposed allowing instalment plans to pay fines under the revised Criminal Code. MPs and opposition parties supported extending payment time for summary offences, noting jail terms for default punish the poor. Lawmakers expect limited changes as provincial administration of justice would apply.
Three Medicine Hat residents escaped injury after a collision on the No. 1 highway near Brooks. W. D. Hunter, Ron Craven, and Jerry Penner were in the car that struck the snowplow in poor visibility.
