Citizens attend a City Hall gathering to map Coronation observances. A committee of three council reps and one delegate from each organization will refine plans, likely focusing on children, folk dancing, and a medal display with funds raised by subscription.
In Edmonton on March 11, Justice Tweedie set a date for hearing an action to test the validity of Alberta's Provincial Debt Adjustment Act of 1986 and the 60 day debt moratorium. Plaintiffs Helene Simard and Joseph Simard seek foreclosure on property held by Charles and Omer Victoor of St Albert. If the act is ruled invalid, the moratorium would be declared ultra vires automatically.
London reports that the 1937 naval rebuilding plan outlined by Sir Samuel Hoare would restore British sea dominance. Naval experts declare the program will make the Royal Navy the strongest in the world, capable of guarding British interests in two hemispheres.
In Edmonton Walter Bruno Baremburch reports an inebriated customer tottered into a cafe early today, complained the last restaurant ran out of soft boiled eggs, ordered 40 done the same way, ate them, paid a $3.10 bill and left. Snowflurries with a 32 degree temperature.
Small market activity noted with more sleighs on the market square. Egg prices ranged from 30 to 40 cents per dozen by grade A B and C. Butter sold at 25 cents per pound. Dressed chicken priced between 50 and 65 cents each.
Rescuers who recovered seven bodies from the Macbeth mine reported locating nine additional missing miners. H P Farley, head of the rescue effort, said two men may remain unfound for days.
Judge Lennox dismissed with costs the $1 125 joint wage claim against Premier William Aberhart of Alberta by John L Loveseth and Mrs M Bower Procteinach. He said the case should never have gone to trial as the plaintiffs sought wages for two months work done while aiding the union.
In the Commons David Lloyd George urged a more adequate, concerted plan to combat recurring unemployment. He criticized government wartime spending while neglecting the weaker link in defence and urged more workers on the land, warning Britain is less prepared than in 1914.
In Edmonton on March 11, the first case under Alberta’s new minimum wage for taxi drivers was dismissed against De Luxe Taxi proprietor George Wallace. The driver Ai A. McLean testified he was let go after two costly accidents, as prosecutors pursued under the Service Vehicles Act.
The Red Deer Social Credit group in Edmonton on March 12 wi th forward resolutions denouncing the Aberhart government for delaying steps to implement Social Credit. They demand immediate cabinet action, oppose Aberhart’s coronation trip, and protest tax increases as contrary to Social Credit principles.
Ottawa reports John J. McFarland, former Canadian Wheat Board chair, denies sending any June 24 estimate of the 1936 wheat crop. He told the House of Commons that he made no such forecast and that the crop’s end-of-June prospects showed failure. The exchange followed remarks by Agriculture Minister Gardiner.
Toronto March 11. The Quebec government will introduce a minimum wage bill for men similar to that now before the Legislature. The Minister of Labor stated the government aims to secure passage of the measure.
The News, at the request of the celebration committee, opens a subscription list for the Coronation celebration on May 12. Citizens may donate up to $1 to Secretary W. Huckvale at the Chamber of Commerce office. Names will be published daily as donations arrive. Early contributors include Ald. E. Warham F. Martyn Oliver F. Blackburn ROES Rathwell T.A. Maxwell H. J. Noble.
Madrid reports 30,000 Italian forces failed to break toward the capital and remained 44 miles away. Insurgent artillery continued bombardment as casualties were feared and neutral observers doubted a swift end to the siege. Authorities also said an attempted kidnap plot against Madrid commanders was foiled with arrests.
In London March 11 AP report indicates Joachim von Ribbentrop German envoy surprised peers by joining King George VI and Queen Elizabeth for tea at Buckingham Palace. He and Frau von Ribbentrop shook hands in line as other ambassadors did, departing after brief greetings.
In Washington on March 12, Townsend was sentenced to one month in jail and fined 100 dollars for contempt of the United States House of Representatives. The old age pension leader’s $1,000 bond was continued pending appeal after his departure from a House committee last summer during pension organization questioning.
The Alberta budget presented to the legislature by Provincial Treasurer OW Paced increases in corporation and rail taxes and raises on insurance and electric power, with a new sales tax scope and a licensing revenue plan. The fiscal year outlook shows a $1,227,815 overall deficit despite higher revenue projections and interest savings.
At a Chamber of Commerce meeting, chairman J Mitchell said horse sale numbers swelled from 150 to about 250 animals with 100 already entered. The group stressed cheaper sale prices to aid farmers, and a committee was formed to arrange Coronation events for May 12. Another topic covered water conservation and irrigation extension, with discussions on the Canada Land and Irrigation Company system and related projects.
Thirty nine deaths were reported today in the measles and influenza epidemic sweeping The La Crosse and Beauval Indian settlements northwest of here. At Beauval Indian mission school 100 Indian children are sick. Every Indian family in Beauval village is reported ill.
About twenty applications for trucker licenses are being heard by the highway commission at the court house today. Commission members include C. A. Davidson, highways commissioner. A. Chard. and W. T. Aitken as secretary.
In Edmonton October, Justice T M Teendie ordered payment of 4000 dollars life insurance revenue into court. Christine Pogmore, widow and heir, was convicted of her husband’s murder and is prevented from collecting the policy. Court will administer funds for six Bogmore children under 21.
Rome and Berlin notify London that a new Locarno style pact is in the works. Italy and Germany present a note to Sir Eric Drummond, British ambassador, outlining a return to the 1925 Locarno guarantee involving Belgium, France, and Germany.
Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs Lucien Maynard defend ed a bill to replace the Reduction and Settlement of Debts Act calling it absolutely just honest and necessary to ease western farmers debt. He urged banks and loan firms to open their ledgers to prove profits and reserves while noting no vote was recorded as the address debate closed in Edmonton.
