Edmonton dispatch reports Alberta Liberal leader W R Howson denounces the budget as fueling deficits with higher taxes and costly debt. He calls for policy changes to aid farmers, settlers, unemployed, soldiers, and natural resources while urging ministerial salary cuts over social spending.
Germany announces to Britain and the major powers its intention to form a military air force, in violation of the Versailles treaty. The notice comes via Captain F. P. Don, British air attache in Berlin. The British government has not yet acted on the notification.
March 12 Havana reports that President Mendieta’s government threatens death for enemies of the regime and imposes prison terms on workers aiding revolutionary strikes. A decree targets saboteurs bombers and attackers of the armed forces after another night of violence with six wounded and no deaths confirmed.
The Cabinet Council finished plans for a new Department of Communications to oversee telegraph, telephone, wireless, and radio interests. R. J. Manion may become the first minister. No bill details were released, and Easter prorogation is rumored as the budget work advances.
LETHBRIDGE March 11 Philip sehring 50 a Nemiscam farmer shot himself at his father's home Saturday evening as friends attended a party in the next room. Police report found $1100 on his person during the search of the scene.
In Moscow on March 12 Joseph Stalin announced a shift in Soviet policy insisting private housekeeping on collective farms and that individual tastes and needs must be respected as long as families and children exist. He rejected a plan to reduce private holdings by farmers.
The bulletin lists diverse readings from Toronto to Vancouver with fair or cloudy skies and mild temperatures. Alberta forecasts show shifting winds, cloudy skies, and a cold snap with possible snow or sleet tonight and Wednesday.
Four Albertans and a Calgary woman arrested in Moose Jaw on charges of passing worthless cheques, tied to a scheme in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. Police say they destroyed cheques and carried a loaded .32 revolver. Suspects, including S. G. Constantine, face charges in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge after transfer.
In London the Labor censure motion against the government failed 424 to 79 after a seven hour debate on defence policy. Supporters of the government led by Stanley Baldwin argued the policies and a recent white paper, while Labor and Liberal critics condemned increased armed forces spending and urged disarmament prospects. Sir John Simon defended the government and reaffirmed commitment to the League of Nations.
Liberal leader Mackenzie King told the House of Commons the party would back unemployment insurance the eight hour day and minimum wage bills though he said each measure exceeds Parliament's competence. The remarks frame the Liberals stance on government reform in Ottawa.
About 60 residents attended the Municipal District of Excelsior meeting at City hall. A condolence letter was sent to the Kidney family. New administrator Mr. Ritchie spoke and the annual financial statement was adopted. Gopher menace and road remedies were also discussed.
Paris March 12 The French cabinet approved a two year military service term to begin in October replacing the existing one year term. Socialists launched a campaign to defeat the measure.
Ottawa March 12 The Conservative party announced campaign directors for the three Prairie provinces J Earl Lawson disclosed Col Ralph H Webb former Winnipeg mayor will head Manitoba with Winnipeg offices Frank W Turnbull Regina MP will direct Saskatchewan campaign Reuben W Ward bakery executive will lead Alberta with offices at Calgary and Edmonton.
J H Craig Toronto architect told the parliamentary housing committee a national housing scheme linked to slum clearance could be financed by selling $400,000,000 in securities to the Bank of Canada and applying proceeds. About 30 percent would fund municipal clearance loans at 2 percent, with construction spending channeled through normal industry rather than relief labor.
In Ottawa on March 12 W A Gordon indicated a bill to provide unemployment relief for the next fiscal year would be introduced within a few days. He said the policy would be disclosed in the bill and noted the federal government would not join the Quebec colonization scheme. The eight hour day bill passed second reading despite labor protests over restaurant workers.
Rome reports the Italian government says former Greek premier Venizelos landed on Cassos in the Aegean and will be interned as a political refugee. London says rebels abandoned naval vessels and Crete Mytilene Chios Samos are back under government control with light casualties.
Ottawa reports Minister Robert Weir said the proposed poultry and egg marketing plan will not take effect in Alberta Saskatchewan or Manitoba after polls showed support below the required 66.3 percent threshold. Voting tallies show Alberta 62.5 percent in favor and 37.5 against. Saskatchewan 63.4 percent in favor. Manitoba 24.3 percent in favor.
Peiping March 12 report says nearly 500,000 people have lost homes in Hopei, Henan and Shantung as the Yellow River spreads, creating a 900 square mile lake amid abandoned villages and ruined walls.
Noted inventor and Columbia University scholar Professor Michael J. Pupin died in New York at age 76. A Hungarian peasant youth who rose to world fame, Pupin’s inventions transformed telephone wireless telegraphy and the X ray.
Believed the oldest person in Canada, Mrs Antonina Pshepielkowska, died in Winnipeg at about 113. Born in Poland she came to Canada at age 81. Ontario proposes lowering old age pension eligibility from 70 to 65.
Manitoba retailers urge the provincial government to establish formal codes guiding retail practice. The push aims to standardize conduct, protect consumers, and ensure fair competition across the province.
Annette Callander, nine months old, became the first of the Dionne quintuplets to sprout a tooth. It appeared overnight through the lower front gum during the nurses’ morning inspection at the Ontario hospital. Dr Allan Roy Dafoe announced the milestone amid hospital excitement.
February reports show coughs and colds remain common among public school pupils. Milk served to 140 pupils daily. Total February enrolment 1,949, a decline from January. The German cruiser Karlsruhe will arrive in Vancouver harbor next Friday with cadets and officers in uniform marking the first German presence on Canadian soil since before World War I. Dr. H. Seelheim, German consul for Western Canada, will join the civic welcome amid special excursions, while officials note the visit has Canadian British government approval and state communists oppose it.
