Medicine Hat MP Rob Olson asserts no firm stance on leadership until a national council meeting on Social Credit issues. Thompson remains an MP for Red Deer and will depart with the resignation effective March 17.
City Council last night approved spending 1 033 400 for 14 public works projects as the first phase of a 7 700 000 five year budget plan drawn up by the Coordinating Committee. The list includes water reservoir work, new water lines, sewer projects, sidewalks, and park improvements.
EDMONTON CP Dr Jan Van Stolk resigned as director of the Alberta Guidante Clinic effective March 31 after declaring loss of confidence in the administration. Health Minister Dr J Donovan Ross said the resignation was accepted, noting past department tensions and his criticisms of guidance clinics. Van Stolk, with the department about eight years, planned to stay through June. The legislature discussed a bill enabling a school division to merge with an improvement district, creating a county subject to plebiscite and gubernatorial approval.
At a budget meeting Ald Simpson pushed for including an arena in the 1967 list under the Winter Works Program, arguing completion by 1968 or 1970 unless delayed by renewal schemes. The council tied decision to the fate of the B1 urban renewal plan and a bridge site near Crescent Heights Hills.
Alberta Agriculture Minister Harry Strom won uncontested the Social Credit nomination for Cypress riding. He has represented the district since 1955 and will seek re election in the next provincial vote. Strom noted no clear opposition yet though past patterns suggest a Conservative candidate may run. The meeting drew under 50 attendees with over 200 for a banquet where Ambrose Holowach spoke on Centennial grants and projects across Alberta. Strom also announced a 72 000 budget for hostels in southern Alberta with up to 20 per cent provincial and federal cost sharing.
Svetlana Alliluyeva, daughter of Joseph Stalin, arrived by Air Italia Viscount from Rome and was whisked away by Swiss police. Officials say she sought a temporary stay in Switzerland after travels from Moscow to New Delhi and Rome, with reports of asylum unconfirmed.
