London reports Soviet forces under Zhukov battling into Kuestrin while Rokossovsky claims Stalins order announces Stolp capture. German broadcasts say fighting rages in Kuestrin with repeated tank and infantry assaults as Russians push toward Berlin from the Oder frontier.
Allied air forces pressed raids on Kassel Datten, Hamburg submarine yards, and Berlin Mosquito bombers for the seventeenth night. U.S. 8th and 15th air forces struck Komarom rail yards near Hungary and other strategic targets as fighters mauled German positions from Wesel to Coblenz.

Edmonton March 9 CP Premier Manning unveiled the province’s first budget as treasurer. The plan centers on a debt refunding to cover 113.2 million net outstanding debt with a 27.9 million expenditure forecast for 1945-46 and an estimated 702 thousand deficit. Revenue for 45-46 is projected at 26.05 million, up from 22.97 million, with gains from liquor profits land title fees and fuel tax. A new Mineral Tax Act is proposed for 250 thousand more revenue. The debt refunding offers 33 year callable bonds at 3.5 percent with exchanges for six and five percent debentures, adjusted accordingly.
A round table with armed forces reps and Calgary Legion branch officials pressed city council to push the federal government to declare Calgary congested and appoint an emergency shelter administrator via the Wartime Prices and Trade Board. The core issue cited was the lack of housing for men returning from overseas.
Washington reports the largest B 29 bomber force yet, over 300 aircraft from Mariana bases pounded Tokyo. Industrial plants targeted amid repeated raids, with Tokyo radio noting night fires in multiple districts and the prior record of 200 planes hitting Tokyo on February 25.

Lethbridge March 9 CP A skillful belly landing by Pilot George Campbell of Moose Jaw saved the lives of eight passengers and three crew aboard a Trans-Canada Air Lines plane at Kenyon Field. The wheels would not lower but the craft landed safely in the grass beside the runway. All eleven occupants escaped unharmed. the undercarriage and belly were damaged.
Manila reports an unconfirmed Toyo broadcast from London claimed US units landed on Mindanao. Earlier Tokyo reports said warships bombarded Zamboanga but no landings by Thursday night. Luzon operations push toward Baguio as Mindanao bases are cited for air assaults and bombardments.
Allied 5th army troops have occupied Carviano about a mile east of their Vergato objective as the push toward Vergato nears the German stronghold. The Germans intensified artillery fire on US 10th Mountain positions along the Bologna Pinto road and in the Serchio valley.
Portsmouth Ohio braces as the Ohio River nears a crest of 65 feet 15 inches with a 2800 foot sandbag dike across the Norfolk and Western yards. Guardsmen and townsfolk build barriers while other areas report receding floods and approaching crests further upriver.

Vancouver March 9 salvage crews continue work on the wrecked freighter Greenhill Park after all fires were extinguished. A salvage derrick and crane team will remove cargo before righting the ship for drydock examination. Fireboats J H Carlisle and Louisa stand by as a possible southwest wind could affect operations. Five bodies recovered with uncertain identities, with two confirmed on Wednesday and others unconfirmed.
An army of rats plaguing downtown Hamilton shops is being fought with commandeered cats. The Hamilton Humane Society has leased out more than 200 cats in pairs to local merchants to protect stored merchandise. The effort targets the ongoing rodent problem affecting downtown businesses.
REGINA March 9. Federal Agriculture Minister Gardiner warned that all-out conscription would curtail Dominion food production and jeopardize allied supplies and peace. He urged farmers to keep hog production high while noting farm labor mobilization regulations are in place. Postponement requests by prairie workers were mostly granted. He stressed feeding liberated countries is essential to peace.
AP dispatch from Guam reports Iwo Jima battle nearing final phase with small gains. The 3rd Marine division reached 300 yards from the northeast coast as Japanese forces hollowed into a crescent-shaped pocket along the north and east shores and resorted to desperate tactics.
Still Murdering Stockholm reports that five more Danish patriots were executed by Germans in Copenhagen, according to a received dispatch.
Major General W. W. Foster said 700 to 800 Canadian civilians will be affected by the US decision to end Canal project operations by June 30. Most workers at the Whitehorse refinery and Yukon pipeline will shift to maintenance on the Alaska Highway as Americans are replaced.
