Four malnourished Russian soldiers, drifted 1,020 miles after their 50-foot landing craft was swept from Etorofu Island, were picked up by the U S S Kearsarge about 1,000 miles west northwest of Midway. They had only three cans of jerky and one loaf of bread, lost 35 to 40 pounds each, and received care aboard the carrier bound for San Francisco.

Felton Turner, a 27 year old Black man, was abducted by four white youths who beat him with chains for about 30 minutes and carved six Ks into his chest and stomach near Houston. Turner escaped, was questioned by police, and treated at a hospital where his condition was listed as not serious. The attack, linked by Turner to recent Texas Southern University sit ins, occurred as he walked home.
Radio report described injuries from a stabbing during a confrontation with Turner while students from Texas Southern University held peaceful sit-ins at Houston lunch counters. Nationwide demonstrations spread from North Carolina to West Virginia with arrests in Virginia and boycotts at Tuskegee Institute.

The 80 year old grandmother Maud Messer of Antony Armstrong-Jones died after a week long illness at a southern England country home. He had told her of his engagement to Princess Margaret a day before the public announcement. Her death came a day after his 30th birthday.
The appeal of 23 year old Robert Raymond Cook against his murder conviction and death sentence is expected to open in Edmonton Supreme Court. Cook was convicted of killing his father Raymond, 53, last June. The filing was delayed from Monday due to court business and five cases carried over.
French frogman Louis Lourmais, 39, former Brest air force captain, starts an 800 mile Rhine crossing from Switzerland to the North Sea in 17 days. He pursues river-bottom research and health claims as he proceeds in stages under a frogman suit with an accompanying motorboat.
Ottawa CP report says the board of transport commissioners refused Western Canada railways request to cut rapeseed freight rates to about one third from Prairie points to the Lakehead. Bogoch Seed Co of Edmonton had filed the application, while CNR and CPR spokesmen noted a 1957 denial on a flax seed similar request.
