Alberta Premier Aberhart told the legislature there is no plan to impose a wage tax as part of income tax changes. The bill introduces a corporate net income scale rising to 19 percent with wage deductions by employers and year end refunds for individuals.
A federal grand jury indicted Ellis H. Parker Sr. and Ellis Parker Jr. of Burlington County New Hampshire and three others for kidnapping under the Lindbergh law. They allegedly abducted Paul H. Wendel, a former Tren ton resident, on February 24 1936 and issued a forged confession claiming Wendel kidnapped Charles A Lindbergh Jr. Brunos Hauptman faced death sentence at the time.
Fortnight petitions seeking a secondary highway into the Rolling Hills irrigation area to join Rona Lane and Medicine Hat were sent to Dr. J. L. Robinson M.L.A. at Edmonton. About 1,000 citizens signed, says W. T. Bannan, secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce.
Ottawa reports the government airport at Coleman Alto cost 9304 to the end of 1937 with 875707 spent under the Unemployment Relief Act and the remainder under civil aviation. All work was done by day labor and no further work is planned. Grading surfacing markers fencing and radio meteorological service buildings completed. Field sustainable for high speed aircraft.

London March 8. In the House of Commons A V Alexander asked if the prime minister would supply copies of telegrams and replies from the Dominions on changes in British foreign policy. Chamberlain said he referred to yesterday’s statements and that the Dominions were fully informed.

In a Moscow courtroom on March 8, Genrikh Yagoda admitted ordering the deaths of Maxim Gorky and Valerian Kuibyshev as part of a purge tied to the first five year plan. Doctors and officials testified they helped murder Gorky and others, while Yagoda denied specific medical killings and claimed prior confessions.
Edw Geogean once sentenced to hang for a murder at Peace River last September has had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment by order from Ottawa authorities.
Ottawa reports that no instructions were sent to Alberta Lieutenant-Governor John Bowen regarding the reservation of assent on three Alberta bills ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. The articles involve credit regulation, bank taxation and newspapers. The government declines to petition Supreme Court to define income tax jurisdiction or penalties for provinces.
Five crewmen of the 70 ton Canuck of Vancouver were rescued after colliding with a tug off Eateep island near Vancouver island. The ship sank almost immediately with 50 tons of dam boxes aboard. The five were brought to Campbell River hospital suffering from exposure.
March 7 Ottawa Prime Minister Mackenzie King expressed regret that circumstances force Rt. Hon. R B Bennett to step down as Conservative leader in the House of Commons. Bennett was applauded as he acknowledged the situation and said his valedictory would come at a later date.
London March 8 The House of Commons backed the government's vast rearmament program after Prime Minister Chamberlain delivered a fighting speech defending democracy and denying bias toward dictators. The tally was 351 to 134 against the Labor amendment.
Swan Magnusson was found guilty on two counts of theft and fraudulent branding of a black horse colt tied to A G Mumert between September 12 and October 16, 1937 near Bowell. The judge reserved sentence, awaiting evidence on a third charge. Witnesses from Seven Persons and Bowell identified the colt as the same animal seen with a mare and in Calgary and Mitchell.
The New York Stock Exchange suspended Richard Whitney and Company from membership for failing to meet obligations. Richard Whitney, senior partner of the firm, led the brokerage for years until stepping back about a year ago, tying the action to the Whitney family and longtime brokerage ties.
A Fraser Valley irrigation scheme presented by the Chamber of Commerce and D W Hay outlined by Mr Burns. The plan aims to flood parts of the Redcliffe-Ronalane area with a feasible water supply and seeks cooperation of citizens. A map showed land likely to be irrigated and the project would be studied by the Rowell Commission and later by provincial and federal governments.
The Medicine Hat City Council discussed leasing Galt Island No. 1 for recreation or park use, directed a letter to the Minister of Lands and Mines, and considered steps to pursue the lease. Mayor Fry of Edmonton criticized Bill 53 Section 9a overreach affecting municipal autonomy and collective bargaining. Tenders for police services were received and referred to the Police Committee. night soil and garbage contracts were examined with a recommendation to invite tenders.
