Alberta to boost southern border with interdiction patrols units
Alberta will spend 15 million to upgrade weigh stations near boundaries to house interdiction patrol units of the Alberta Sheriffs. The plan, announced by Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis in Medicine Hat, adds Dunmore Coutts and the Crowsnest Pass facilities to strengthen cross border policing against drug human and weapons trafficking. The unit, formed in December, now has 20 members with 31 more joining to reach 51 plus 10 support staff. Teams will patrol south of Highway 3 from Medicine Hat Lethbridge Burmis and Dunmore Coutts and focus on drug and human trafficking investigations. A Volker Stevin highway firm agreement will train workers to identify and report suspicious activity.
