Budget passes in Medicine Hat as tax and utility increases die
Medicine Hat council approves a no tax increase operating budget of 48.6 million for general operations while defeating proposed electric rate increases of two percent and water rate hikes of one percent. Aldermen Anderson Hamill voted against both the budget and the rate increases, citing hardship for citizens. The city expects 1996 revenues of 48 million for general services and 83 million from utilities, with a 13 million profit to fund debt repayment and reserves. Mayor Grimm called the plan sensible and noted staffing cuts and a windfall from Alberta Municipal Finance Corporation helping hold taxes steady for the fourth straight year.
