Budapest endures Russian occupation and Communist rule as it slowly recovers from the 1956 revolt. Estimates place 25,000 killed and 200,000 exiled, with heavy property losses and a city scarred by war. Curfews persist, pockets of gaiety remain in cafes, and Western help is not expected by Hungarians.

Alberta debated a 11 million dollar citizens dividend from an 285 million budget as Liberal J Harper Prowse called it folly and Calgary lawyer Hugh John MacDonald denounced the plan. PREMIER Manning faced closure claims as the cabinet defined residency for eligible recipients. Ottawa reports record foreign capital inflows to Canada in 1956, led by U S investments and overseas purchases, with total imports of 763 million and 518 million from the United States.
