In Centralia Miss Bertha Pitchford 71 died last month in her cottage near 30 acres of oil land. Her relatives dug the yard searching for buried treasure but found only her body and no coins. Officials later recovered 29700 in big bills from her purse and 500 tucked under a pillow. She had received oil royalty checks for over two decades and once spoke of burying money near a flower bed. The cat’s body was the only other find.
Alberta will raise gasoline taxes by two cents a gallon starting April 1 raising the gas tax to 12 cents and diesel to 14 cents. The move, described as a fairer cost share for road use, is expected to add about 7.32 million in revenue over last year and total revenue around 34.32 million. Vehicle licence fees remain unchanged and are forecast to yield 14.046 million due to more vehicles.
The 1961 62 budget presented in the Alberta Legislature shows a $13.29 million deficit with expenditures totaling $336.7 million and revenue of $323.4 million. Major outlays include highways, education and public health, while revenue relies on federal rental subsidies and mines. Crown lease receipts fall by about $24 million as oil and gas lease prices slide. Liquor profits rise to about $21 million.

Four members of an Okanagan family died when their car skidded off the Hope Princeton highway fifteen miles west of Princeton and plunged 500 feet down a mountainside. A man his wife and two teenage daughters were believed killed instantly. Police withheld names. Landing crews worked the icy highway as details awaited.
Alberta will transfer all recording and accounting to electronic machines by April of next year. Provincial treasurer EF W Hinman stated the move will improve accounting procedures and reduce costs.

A Calgary couple were killed by shotgun blasts after a dispute over the family car. Police say Russell Osborne, 23, shot his wife Gladys, 29, in the back and then killed himself with a 12 gauge shotgun at their home. The incident is described as murder suicide.
