A fatal drowning occurred miles from shore at Barry's Bay near Wiarton Ontario as Ambrose Stamplecoskie and Felix Recoskie perished. Two other passengers, Ambrose's son and a brother, were involved in the incident.
Mary Anne Jeffries, who cleaned homes for decades and cared for her grandsons after family troubles, celebrated her 104th birthday at a Toronto convalescent home. Teresa Smith Viars, 22, a GI wife in Lancashire, England, is under investigation with husband Jim G. Viars Jr. of Dayton, Ohio defending her. She reportedly lived six months in 1950 as a GI with seven airmen at Great Burtonwood base and wore a GI uniform on parade, answering to any missing name.
Alberta, led by Matt Baldwin, stayed undefeated with a 20-6 win over Newfoundland as the Canadian curling championship action continued in Edmonton. Northern Ontario dropped to a second place tie after a 10-8 defeat to Saskatchewan, while Nova Scotia crushed Prince Edward Island 16-4 and Ontario beat Quebec 13-10. Four draws remain in the five day event.
