Medicine Hat energy division head Gerry Labas retires after 16 years

Gerry Labas chief operating officer of the energy division will retire at the end of May after 16 years in Medicine Hat city hall management. He cited personal reasons and plans to stay in town. Labas has overseen a dual executive structure amid a broader organizational review and will pass leadership as the city continues key energy and municipal projects.

Edmonton Safe Families Intervention Team hailed as model for domestic violence response

In June 2010 a Lago Lindo gas explosion linked to a domestic killer left an Edmonton neighbourhood shattered and prompted a provincial court to issue 12 recommendations. The Safe Families Intervention Team formed after a 2013 rural fatal crash has been praised as a successful, integrated approach combining MHPS officers, Women’s Shelter staff and social workers to intervene within days in non charge cases and provide safety resources.

Woman behind dog seizure faces harassment amid court case

April Dawn Irving, 55, of Milk River, appeared in Lethbridge provincial court as her case over animal cruelty adjourned to Friday. She reports death threats and media vilification while defending her care of 60 surrendered dogs and SPCA-seized animals.
