The International Monetary Fund issued a clarification to its last month money growth data. It said Canada’s money supply rose 37 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, about four times the rate in other major industrial countries and over twice any other industrial nation.
A Panamanian-registered trawler entered St John’s harbor after being arrested off Newfoundland for unauthorized entry into Canadian waters. The Peonia No. 7 initially refused orders to head to St John’s, prompting call for the navy’s Algonquin. The ship was escorted by Cape Roger and Algonquin to the harbor at dawn.
From Stockholm sources mounting speculation follows the murder of prime minister Olof Palme. Foreign ministry officials say Palme’s mediation role in the Gulf conflict and contacts with PLO leaders may feed theories. Police continue their hunt as Lisbeth Palme notes she believes the killer watched the Palmes for days.
John Turner faced a fragile hold on Quebec Liberals as rifts between Montreal and Quebec City widened amid calls for leadership renewal. Former ministers urged unity and warned that if Turner fails by November a Chrétien return could be forced.
Federal investigators report a CN freight train halted suddenly at the Dalehurst signal after misreading an approach signal. It mirrors the Feb. 8 Hinton collision that killed 23 and left over 90 injured. Investigators found no signal fault and said crew error caused the misread.
Prime Minister Mulroney charged Liberal policy left Canada with a debt surge from 18 billion to 200 billion between 1967 and 1986. He told about 650 Conservatives in Kitchener that fixing finances would foster growth and criticized John Turner as the father of the debt. Finance Minister Wilson toured Toronto endorsing the budget as a deficit reduction step while noting tax hikes.
