Medicine Hat reports utilities funded 52.3 percent of the 1953 budget and direct taxes 27.6 percent, with other revenues totaling 20.1 percent. Utilities rose to cover over half of city funds, relieving property owners's tax burden.
The 1953 balance sheet lists the city of Medicine Hat worth 10 250 000 to its ratepayer owners as the total asset figure for all physical properties. It notes more than one million dollars in quick assets held as reserve funds in general and utilities accounts.
