Edmonton March 1 Liberal J T Shaw Bow Valley urged higher salaries for technical school teachers and school inspectors as the education estimates were considered. He noted two new resident inspectors would be appointed in Calgary and argued more are needed in rural districts. The minister replied rural supervision and teacher scarcity justify raises. the department's estimates totaling 2 444 292 10 were passed.
England's oldest man William Walker of Nottingham died today at age 107. He began as a bricklayer at 12, worked until 85 earning about 5.25 dollars per week, then went on strike for a larger hourly wage and never worked again.
An elaborate plot to escape Sing Sing prison was foiled when a 40 foot tunnel beneath the yard was discovered four feet from the wall. Convicts filled the tunnel, and Chief Keeper John Sheehy led the discovery as keepers seek the builders.
Nationalist northern troops mutinied at Lematemple in Peking firing on western city streets. Loyal forces moved in to disarm the mutineers who formed an entire regiment, causing panic as casualties remained undisclosed while a cordon surrounded the area.
A runaway train at St. Clair yards of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal Company crashed into a caboose, killing two men and injuring one. The cars began moving for unknown reasons and smashed the caboose, piling wreckage fifty feet high.
Paris March 2 The condition of Marshal Foch remained stationary today as doctors ended their consultation. He had another restful night and received solid food to aid strength while officials await a formal bulletin. temperature 100.4 and pulse 84 were reported.
A major blaze in Rossland B C fed by strong winds and frozen mains destroyed ten buildings including the post office and threatened the Bank of Montreal. Firefighters from Trail aided in battling the flames as the outbreak began shortly before midnight and was controlled by nine this morning with losses estimated at $200000.
An executive meeting of the Medicine Hat Fish and Game Association will be held tomorrow at two in The Mews office to finalize banquet details for mid March. Outsiders visiting include Benj. Lawton Edmonton Game Commissioner C A Hayden Calgary President of Alberta Fish and Game Assn and W R Brockington Calgary City Solicitor. The menu features fish and bison and about 150 are expected to attend. Five Winnipeg auto accident deaths so far this year.
Hector Lang moves that secondary school studies be referred to the curriculum committee to consider lightening content and standardizing entrance requirements. The speaker notes growth in secondary enrollment from 2.41 percent in 1906 to 11.44 percent in 1928, and urges careful consideration of changes to meet students’ needs as they enter high school. In Edmonton on March 2 the Legislature debated the policy of reducing police salaries and stationing constables at the Legislative Building entrance. Labour and Conservative members attacked the move, arguing it harms enlisted officers and breaches expectations, while Premier Brownlee defended the measure as preventive and orderly.
October wheat led gains on the Winnipeg market with opening purchases of Winnipeg October against Chicago September sales. May was slightly weaker as prices ranged from 1 8 cent lower to half a cent higher for the day. High trade cuts stayed fair while barley and rye demand stayed light and flax eased about one cent due to weak demand.

Miss Agnes Forster of Oakville to receive a silver cross for life saving after pulling in fellow skater Kitty Allen from icy 16 Mile Creek. Thirteen boys and girls were fined at the City Police Court for trespassing on the CPR by using short cuts across the tracks. A morning session at the Juvenile Court saw sixteen youths, all under sixteen, fined one dollar each with no costs for a similar offence.
