Cascade Lodge No 8 2 and Charity Lodge hosted a two hundred guest ball at Woster's Opera House on Feb 26. The event featured railway themed decor, a grand programme including Lancers and quadrilles, elaborate supper by Mrs. Bassett, and strong community support from Brotherhood committees. Proceeds fund Hospital Nurses Home.
London dispatch confirms Gen Cronje and all forces capitulated at daylight near Paardeberg on Feb 27. About 3000 prisoners, including 1500 Free State and 1500 Transvaal citizens, to Cape Town. Cronje to be treated with respect, wife and aides to accompany. Troops, Canadian engineers, Scots, and Guards advance, roads and trenches shortened. surrender announced in Lords and Commons with cheers.
Ottawa dispatch from Lord Roberts details Royal Canadian regiment attack on enemy trenches with several killed and many wounded. The message lists casualties by name and unit, notes officers captured, and mentions prisoners from Transvaal and Free State forces.
The council met on the 26th ult with Mayor Finlay and five councillors. They instructed the secretary to seek a meeting between town officials and military leaders to discuss a waterworks pumping station site and adjourned. A second meeting on the 27th saw final passage of Fire Limit, Restaurant, and Boarding House By-Laws and the appointment of auditors HH. W. Ireland and F.D. Noble for 1800 at $30 each.
Mayor Finlay shares a letter from Dick McCloy of the Sceatbeona Hore camp in Ottawa. The note describes the boys’ trip on the train, a visit to the Russell Theatre, and use of YMCA rooms. Town crowds fill the grounds as a Winnipeg troop arrives.
War Office dispatches from Gen. Dundonald and Gen. Buller describe Ladysmith's relief near after repeated attacks on Presters Hill. Casualties reach about 4000 in attempts to evacuate Gen. White and ongoing fighting continued amid a Sunday armistice. Churchill notes wounded suffering and reports Boers using varied bullets while Cronje evacuates with civilians.
In Medicine Hat a daughter was born to Mrs. M Ravey of Crowfoot on the 22nd. Another daughter arrived for Mrs Po Penhale on the same date. A son was born to Mrs W Totus on the 23rd.
