RCMP Constable Scott Berry, 27, from Nanaimo, died at the scene after touching a 14 400 volt power line while trying to aid victims of a single vehicle crash 30 kilometres north of Vermilion Alberta. Passerby Chris Yaceyko, 22, of Vermilion, was burned when she touched the line and remained in hospital in Edmonton.
Three men hired a cab, asked the driver to go around back and offered a portable stereo as a tip to keep him quiet. The driver, who remained unnamed, contacted police after realizing the ploy and noted the suspects paid the fare and left the stereo as part of the ruse.
