A blaze in the Ansar Bhavan building in downtown New Delhi trapped more than 300 people on upper floors for hours. At least three killed and up to 80 injured as officials and rescuers conducted room by room searches and many were plucked from the roof. Fire officials suspect an electrical short circuit as a likely cause.
John Demjanjuk said he will testify in his Nazi war crimes trial but only after a better interpreter translates from Hebrew to Ukrainian. Judge Dov Levine granted a defense motion to recess the trial until July 27 for Demjanjuk to be the first defense witness.
Federal Finance Minister Michael Wilson urged Albertans to accept a federal sales tax, noting Alberta already pays a hidden tax. He tied reform to income tax cuts and said a federal portion would apply nationwide while provinces tailor a portion to provincial needs.
In Ottawa the House of Commons set a 119 to 59 vote to invoke closure and rush a government motion backing restoring capital punishment. The plan would send the measure to a Commons committee for three months of study before potential legislation, then Senate approval. Liberal Warren Allmand predicted a narrow outcome within five votes.

The 20,000 member Letter Carriers' Union of Canada expands rotating walkouts in three Quebec centers to pressure Canada Post, while strikebreakers are halted for seven days. Kelly urges compromise and warns against rigid positions.
