Frigate contracts awarded for six navy ships
Ottawa reports Saint John Shipbuilding and Drydock Co Ltd has won a 3.85 billion contract to build six frigates. HMCS Halifax will enter service in 1989 with completion by 1992. Three ships will be built in Saint John and three at Sorel, Quebec, Saint John as prime contractor. The program will create about 30 000 person years of work. Davie Shipbuilding in Lauzon, Quebec will be offered a 650 million contract to refit the four newest destroyers from the early 1970s.
