Ottawa reports the Bank of Canada lifted its key rate by 0.25 percentage point to 3.5 percent, the first rise in 16 months. The move, spurring expectations of higher prime and loan costs, gave the dollar a quick boost before closing at 72.37 US cents. Analysts say the economy can absorb the hike, though markets were unsettled.
Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons reports 692 complaints in 1996 up from 626. James Hammer, 35, pleaded guilty in Kitchener to stealing over 110000 in lawn ornaments and patio furniture over a nine year span. He admitted taking items from 1987 onward including cement pots, Little Bo Peep figurines, lawn furniture and a snowmobile from friends, neighbors and relatives. His defence argued some items were his own.
