Manitoba's likely new premier is a 33 year old who signals confidence after an election victory. Ed Schreyer expressed optimism as he donned the role, touting strength across multiple avenues and promising to steer the province toward success.
In Winnipeg and across Manitoba Wednesday election results toppled Premier Walter Weir's Progressive Conservative government. NDP leader Ed Schreyer won in Rossmore while key ministers and incumbents lost or changed seats. CresCentwood and Osborne shifted to New Democrats, and Lakeside returned a Liberal seat to Harry Enns after Bond’s defeat. Capitol City races and rural victories shaped a minority 28 to 22 split in the 57 member assembly. Schreyer pledged to form a government with a broad slate and a social democratic platform.
In Omaha Nebraska a six block stretch of business buildings burned and suffered looting after the fatal shooting of a 14 year old Negro girl by white officer James Loder adopted son of actress Hedy Lamarr. Police jailed at least 30 for concealed weapons illegal entry and related charges as fire crews faced bricks and bottles while riot police protected responders.
Ottawa CP reports the federal government unveiled a plan to place Canada’s 237,490 registered Indians on the same footing as other citizens. Indian bands would own lands they occupy, end the reserve system, and repeal the Indian Act within five years. The policy aims to shift services to provinces and end separate legal status, with education and programs moved to normal channels. Opposition welcomed the step toward equality but warned of constitutional issues with provincial control. See continuation on page 2.
Montreal city officials moved to ban night time St. Jean Baptiste celebrations and close St. Helen's Island park to prevent riots during Nixon and Trudeau visit at Man and His World. A Saturday bonfire and fireworks display was cancelled to assure public safety amid recent violence, arrests, and property damage.
Prime Minister Trudeau and President Nixon will fly into Montreal by helicopter Friday for ceremonies marking the 10th anniversary of the St. Lawrence seaway. The event spans the Canadian side and Great Lakes to Sault Ste. Marie with a border ceremony at the Moses Saunders Power Dam. Attendees include Transport Minister Don Jamieson, U S Volpe, Ontario Premier Robarts, and Quebec minister Beaudry.
New Democrats stunned Manitoba by toppling Walter Weir's Conservative government in a provincial election. Ed Schreyer, 33, led the NDP to 28 seats with Conservatives at 22 Liberals 5 and Social Credit 1. Churchill outcome undecided as post-returns awaited.
Israeli warplanes battled MiG-21 fighters over the Gulf of Suez and reported two Egyptian jets shot down. An army spokesman said one MiG plunged into Egyptian territory while a second aircraft was destroyed. This follows a third MiG-21 claimed down in three days, with another reported near the Suez Canal outlet earlier in the week.
Neil Byers captured the Kelvington by election for the New Democratic Party as Liberal Ross Thatcher and his government faced a setback. Byers led all night to finish with 3,126 votes, while Liberal Bryan Bjarnason totaled 2,596 and Progressive Conservative Anita Kubat had 540. Thatcher blamed the wheat crisis for the loss. Lloyd framed it as Libera policies reflected in Regina and Ottawa.
