Seventy Deaths Reported in Java Quake Strike

A major earthquake devastated South Ken coulen seaport area and nearby towns including Kota Agung Palemsang and Lampung in Batavia Java. Isola Agung reported nine dead and forty injured as about 500 houses collapsed. Maroon Malayans populate the region.

Norwegian farmer killed at railway crossing near Innisfail

Bernhard Sein Scher a 20 year old Norwegian farmer was killed when northbound train No 525 struck his truck at the Nighe level crossing three miles north of Innisfail. Coroner and police attended as inquest opened. the body removed to Sheffield's parlors. Scher worked for Pans Chrishe and was en route to town for supplies. Local wheat prices section follows. Charles B. Martin, VP and GM of National Paper Goods Co., died at Hamilton Ontario.

Passing of Hugh Jones 87 in Redcliff notes

Redcliff resident Hugh Jones aged 87 died at Medicine Hat General Hospital after being moved there Saturday. Born in Wales, he came to Canada over fifty years ago and helped plant trees by the Hut depot. He lived with his son Evan Jones and the interment date will be announced. Sunday services at Gordon Memorial Church paused for July and August.

Driver Exonerated After Inquest Into Kathleen Horn Death

Jury finds driver Mrs Dani Matilda Koenig not at fault in the death of Kathleen Horn. Investigation showed the child ran onto Ash Avenue around 4 30 to 5 pm near Balmoral Street, and the car struck her with no failure of braking or horn. Witnesses corroborate the events, coroner presides, and Mrs Koenig testified with limited protection under the facts.

Fire damages Lowell as woman perishes and 10 firemen hurt

A blaze swept Lowell Massachusetts destroying the Federal Shoe factory the Swedish Baptist church and a dozen houses. A 70 year old woman Miss Margaret Pethie died while trying to save her bank book as flames closed in. Ten firemen were injured and 15 other structures damaged. The fire prompted officials to estimate losses at 300000.

In Quepec on June 26 about forty men gathered in the City Council chambers demanding work or food for their families. The crowd grew tense and a tear gas bomb was tossed into their midst. One man was arrested for disorderly conduct as officials promised relief efforts would continue.

June Employment Shows Improvement in Canada

Canada sees a surge in industrial activity at the start of June with payrolls rising from 715,068 to 743,572 across 8,105 firms. The gain outpaced 1931 and 1932, and June 1933 marks both the hottest and one of the driest Junes on record with only 0.96 inch of precipitation to date. Weekend toll from science misfire? No clear headline

Seventeen people died in Canada over the weekend from automobile accidents, lightning, fire, starvation, and a train collision. Ontario reported six deaths with many injured, Quebec eight including T. C. Cooper who perished from starvation after illness near Southham, searchers could not locate him. Manitoba and Saskatchewan also saw fatalities from lightning and other causes.

Simpson Elected President of Medicine Hat Labor Party

At the Medicine Hat Branch meeting in Moose Hall officers for the coming year were named President Alderman P. M. Simpson Vice President F J McCombs Sec Treasurer J Lorraine and an eight member executive. Dues set at 25 cents a quarter and affiliation with the provincial Canadian Labour Party approved. Simpson elected as delegate to the National Conference of the C C F in Regina starting July 20. A broad membership drive planned and the executive empowered to call another meeting soon.

Bomb Explodes in St Peters Portico Injuring Four

Vatican City June 25 A bomb planted in the St Peters portico injured four people, one seriously. An unknown visitor left a valise containing the device near the umbrella check booth. Demetrio Solamon charged with planting the explosives. police say the weapon was made in Spain and brought here.
